This book is the first overall presentation of Silberkuppe. Since it’s founding in May 2008, Silberkuppe has become one of Berlin’s most outstanding independent spaces for contemporary art. Dominic Eichler and Michel Ziegler run the space from a twenty-five square metre room in a former concierge‘s office. Over the last two years they have initiated around twenty projects including exhibitions, lectures, presentations, film screenings, concerts and performances, which together have involved more than fifty cultural producers with diverse interests and backgrounds, including contemporary artists, architects, actors, dancers, designers, musicians and writers. This catalogue comes as a result of the exhibition “Under One Umbrella” (2010) in Bergen Kunsthall, a project that was the culmination of a series of institutional group exhibitions in which Silberkuppe extended their practice out from their own micro-space. It takes the form of a “photographic report” documenting all of Silberkuppe’s main exhibitions and events, as well as presenting several essays related to the projects.

This artist’s book is based on Cyprien Gaillard’s “Geographical Analogies,” a collection of 900 Polaroids, carefully and rigorously arranged in a total of 100 showcases, telling many stories about landscapes, monuments, modernist buildings, and architectonic utopias, and just as many stories about decay, destruction, and devastation.
As Rein Wolfs puts it in the introduction of this publication “Gaillard’s epic work, outmodedly analog … reflects a computation of time that seems to have disappeared …. In the disintegrating medium of Polaroid photography the aspect of disappearance inherent to time is documented and allegedly temporarily halted—until in foreseeable time these originals too will have disappeared beyond recall … Decay, disappearance, remembrance and decline are omnipresent motifs in this work … Numerous devastated concrete landscapes, unfinished holiday developments, monuments, ruins, modernist high-rise estates, cemeteries, landscapes and—as a counterpoint—golf courses stand for an equal number of failed ambitions, or decaying cultural testimonies to their time … But the ‘Geographical Analogies’ can be conserved for perpetuity in the format of this book which, like an atlas arranging things at a different level, represents a further stage of scientific classification: a global atlas full of ruins of the Gaillard trademark. Beautifully designed by Guillaume Mojon (Zurich) this book is the first monograph dedicated to the German artist Katinka Bock. Following a series of solo exhibitions of Bock in France, Germany and Holland since 2007, three authors were invited to write for this book: the art critics and historians Sabeth Buchmann and Kim West, and the artist Natascha Sadr Haghighian. Their three essays offer a variety of writing styles and approaches of art criticism, between empiricism, theory and fiction. But all pursue, in their own way, the very subject of Bock’s work, which is that thinking is a social conduct, maybe the most consequential of social acts.

Produced in the aftermath of the solo exhibitions recently organized at the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière (France); the Kunsthalle Bern (Switzerland) and the Parc Saint Léger – Centre d’art contemporain (France), I CAN’T SEE stands as the first comprehensive monograph on the work developed by American artist Oscar Tuazon since 2002. It was co-published with Do.Pe Press and features more than 250 pages of images of works and documents, a series of short texts authored by Ariana Reines, Matthew Stadler, Cedar Sigo, Karl Holmqvist, Thomas Boutoux, Carissa Rodriguez, Eileen Myles and David Lewis as well as a long interview with the artist done by Chiara Parisi, Sandra Patron and Philippe Pirotte, the curators of his recent shows.

Over the past several years, Joe Scanlan has read a lot of seminal economic texts and noticed that a strange thing kept happening: where the original authors were talking about absentee ownership, stagnating markets, colonialism and government subsidies, in the artist’s head he heard them talking about artists’ neighborhoods, Chelsea galleries, tae kwon do lessons, Jack Kerouac. Fascinated with these recurrent, uncontrollable synapses, Scanlan rewrote the texts as he heard them in his head and color-coded each alteration. Produced for his exhibition at castillo/corrales in May 2009, Joe Scanlan’s Red Flags contains four essays that the artist has refracted from original texts by Thorstein Veblen, Joseph Schumpeter, Milton Friedman and Edward Said, gathered in a slim, elegant book, beautifully designed by Francesca Grassi.
