Experiencing Hypnotism

Experiencing Hypnotism is a series of black and white images found on the internet featuring people under the control of hypnotists. A circular graphic has been applied on the foreheads, where visible, of these people. Moreover, hypnotists’ sentences have been added. These sentences are commands pronounced by hypnotists to induce hypnosis. Some of the sentences in experiencing hypnotism have been taken from real hypnosis events, others have been taken from instruction booklets for setting up hi-fi systems like home theaters or receivers.

That’s Not Me – Nuri Koerfer

“TThat’s Not Me presents snap­shots taken between 2001 and 2009 of the artist Nuri Koer­fer on hol­i­day and in her home coun­try, Switzer­land. While Koer­fer embod­ies the role of model, her friends and fam­ily act as pho­to­graph­ers, taking pictures of Koerfer posing with the dead animals, or the skeletons of dead animals, that she has found along her walks, playfully breathing life into each cada­ver.

The idea for That’s Not Me came about when Koerfer was in China, where she lived and worked for six months in con­junc­tion with a schol­ar­ship. It’s her first excur­sion into pho­to­graphy, and printed in an edition of 500 hand-numbered copies

Diselbrugger Apokalypse

When someone as peaceful as Emanuel Halpern (Zurich, 1948) draws an apocalypse, things must be pretty bad with the world. His fifty large-scale coloured pencil drawings telling the story of the destruction of Dieselbrugg confirm this prediction. This is his comic version of Dürrenmatt‘s valley of confusion. Reality, which is usually slouching towards tragedy, can be described only by comic means. Both talented storytellers subscribe to this truism. They give us solid citizens with image and text collages that are almost excessively artistic and hypertrophic. But the images underline the fact that this is the only way that we can tackle and escape from the mess.

In the Dieselbrugg Apocalypse, Halpern manages to move between pilgrimage and the misery of refugees with the sure-footedness of a somnambulist. “You can‘t really be as dozy as that” he seems to be muttering. “Come into my yurt In here you will hear peace bells ringing,
you‘ll see bathing towels fluttering. This is Dieselbrugg.”
